John Muir Trail Foundation is looking for a Director of Charitable Giving to join our team
dedicated to the conservation of the John Muir Trail (est.1915). The JMTF’s mission is
to conserve the long history and natural environment of the JMT corridor, including its
main access trails and resupply sites, for people to enjoy for the centuries to come. We
not only repair and maintain the JMT, but also care for the wilderness, wildlife and
waters along its path in the high Sierra Nevada of California. We bring together the
various stakeholders and resource managers along the JMT route in an effort to
strategically fund and implement on-the-ground projects to conserve and protect the
historic trail and its sensitive wilderness for future generations. In particular, we work
with the National Park Service in Yosemite and Sequoia Kings Canyon National Parks,
and the United States Forest Service in Inyo and Sierra National Forests. We also
coordinate and work with Yosemite Conservancy and the Sequoia Parks Conservancy,
as they are the two on-the-ground non-profits responsible for the lands traversed by
parts of the JMT.
Position: Director of Charitable Giving
Time Commitment: regular employee, 30 hours per week, can work remotely, Bay Area
Salary: $85,000 - 100,000. Salary commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits
package, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance, vacation and sick leave;
salary is noted on a pro-rated basis; position is budgeted for a minimum of four years;
position will be supported by an administrative assistant (also to be hired).
Reporting: Direct report to the JMTF Project Director
Responsibilities: Organize and lead donor fund-raising activities, supported by a person
to-be-hired for administrative support. This includes three areas of donor outreach: (i)
corporate giving: charitable departments within corporations in the recreational apparel
and equipment space; (ii) high net-worth donors, thus requiring some familiarity with
stock grants, donor-advised funds or annuity arrangements; and (iii) retail donations
through social media outreach on FaceBook and Instagram accounts. Will be required
to oversee our donor spreadsheet/ database with all contact information and donation
history. Will need to coordinate the on-line donors for further communication and
updates, to distribute email blasts of news letters and to coordinate printing of labels for
mailings of donor collateral. Will need to work with the Project Director to develop
further content and collateral for corporate and individual donors. May be asked to work
with Project Director on possible fund-raising events.
Candidates for this position must have:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Five or more years of nonprofit fundraising experience.
Proven track record of achieving revenue targets. Proven management and
Strong writing and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including those
related to fundraising, grant writing, and reporting.
Strong social media experience including writing targeted messaging include
blogging, creating social media profiles, managing regular posts and responding
Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new corporate sponsors,
donors and funders.
Thorough understanding of foundation and major donor fundraising, including
experience working directly with donors and foundation program officers.
Finance and budgeting experience; Excel proficiency, QuickBooks is a plus.
Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of database programs.
High energy, a high degree of initiative, and a positive attitude, while maintaining
flexibility, a willingness to work in teams and alone.
The ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously is a must while maintaing
attention to details.
